Dental Bridges
One or more missing teeth seriously impact the appearance and health of your smile. Specifically, missing teeth can cause:
- A shift in the alignment of existing teeth
- Increased risk of periodontal disease and tooth decay
- Loss of adjacent teeth
- Indistinct speech
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
- An older appearance
What are dental bridges?
Like dental implants and partial dentures, dental bridges replace one or more missing teeth. Typically, bridges are supported by the teeth on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth.
What are the benefits of bridges?
Bridges serve a restorative purpose. A dental bridge improves your ability to chew and speak, as well as the appearance of your smile. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, dental bridges were shown to dramatically reduce the risk of losing adjacent teeth. In addition, dental bridges prevent jaws and faces from changing shape due to lack of support when teeth are missing.
What types of bridges are available?
Cantilever bridges replace a tooth that does not have supporting teeth on both sides of the affected area. Maryland bonded bridges include artificial teeth and gums and are held in place by a metal frame. Traditional bridges, the most common type of bridge, span the gap left by missing teeth with prosthetics attached to crowned abutment teeth or dental implants.
How are dental bridges placed?
Dr. Blanchard designs and places dental bridges in as few as two appointments. First, the dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for a dental bridge. If you are, he’ll prepare your teeth by reshaping or reconstructing any badly decayed or damaged areas. Then, we’ll take a dental impression and send it to a lab to create a mold for your temporary bridge. At your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary and place your permanent bridge, making adjustments, if any, for esthetics and comfort.
How long do dental bridges last?
Your dental bridge may last from 8 to 15 years, and perhaps longer if you maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular checkups and cleanings.
Are bridges covered by dental insurance?
Most insurers cover a portion of the cost of a dental bridge. At your appointment, we’ll let you know your exact out-of-pocket costs. To finance your dental bridge, apply for a low- or no-interest loan with convenient payment options on the CareCredit website.
