Root Canal Therapy: Preserving Teeth & Renewing Smiles

In the past, teeth with diseased nerves were automatically extracted. Thankfully, things have changed! Dr. Blanchard performs modern root canal therapy to preserve internally damaged teeth. In most cases, a root canal is a simple procedure with little or no patient discomfort.

Within each tooth, canals that supply the tooth with blood and nutrients extend from the pulp (or nerve) to the root. If the canals sustain damage, the pulp may become infected. Untreated, the pulp can die, cutting off the supply of nutrients and nerve signals that the tooth needs to remain healthy.

During a root canal, the dentist removes the pulp, cleans the canal, and seals the tooth to save and protect it. After an opening is created through the top of the tooth into the dental pulp chamber, the pulp is removed. The canal is cleaned out, and the chamber filled. Dr. Blanchard then places a temporary filling, followed a short time later by a permanent filling or crown, depending on the location of the tooth.
