Finding Out What You Need to Know

How does the doctor keep up to date on all of the current techniques and materials?

Dr. Blanchard subscribes to the latest industry journals to keep tabs on research and developments in dentistry. He also takes time on a regular basis for continuing education and is active on several dental-related internet sites, as well. Our entire team attends an annual convention to improve our areas of expertise. Can you show me what my smile can look like ahead of time with some of that fancy imaging stuff?

We routinely use dental imaging to help our patients visualize the end results of cosmetic and restorative work. Computer imaging accurately demonstrates how a specific procedure will affect your smile. You can view the image on our screen and take a copy home to show your family.

What about my children – at what age do they first see a dentist?

We like to see children for a first dental visit around age three. To begin a positive, nurturing relationship between our staff and your children, we recommend that your kids accompany you to one or two of your checkups. We'll introduce ourselves, show your children around the office, and help them understand what a dentist does. Shortly thereafter, we’d like to see them for a first appointment, with the objective of keeping it simple, short, and fun. We'll take a quick look at their teeth, troubleshoot a bit, and look for ways to prevent any potential oral health problems. Call today to schedule checkups for your little ones.

Do you accept my insurance plan?

Our office accepts most major insurance plans that let you select your dentist. We are not, however, on any managed care lists. Our team is well-versed in the latest coverage trends, and we’re more than happy to discuss the particulars of your plan with you prior to your treatments. Call if you have questions.

What are my payment options?

We accept cash, check, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Low- and no-interest payment plans are available through CareCredit.

What do I do if I have an emergency when the office is closed?

In case of a true dental emergency after hours, simply call Dr. Blanchard on his pager, 214-249-4096, and leave a message. He’ll return your call as soon as possible.

I have a temporary crown in my mouth. What happens if it comes off or breaks?

If your temporary crown comes off, the best solution is to re-adhere the piece onto the tooth, using either toothpaste (yes – it works!) or over-the-counter dental cement found in most drugstores. Simply hold the crown in place for about two minutes after applying the adhesive, then be careful not to use that side of your mouth. You'll want to call our Carrollton dental office and set up an appointment for the next business day. If the crown breaks into pieces, call Dr. Blanchard right away to inform him of the situation. He’ll advise you accordingly.

What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?

Our entire team is well-versed in state-of-the-art sterilization techniques designed to ensure patient safety. This includes barrier methods to prevent passing germs – wearing gloves and facemasks, and using disposable coverings on our chair headrests and light handles. Plus, we heat sterilize all instruments in our specialized sanitation center after each patient use. Each treatment room contains its own water source, which is flushed with sterilization fluid on a regular schedule. We also conduct monthly tests on sterilizers and our water supply.

I don't like drills. Are there any other options?

We subscribe to the practice of “early detection,” in which we try to detect decay long before it requires invasive techniques to remove. Dr. Blanchard eliminates early-stage decay with air abrasion, which uses a stream of tiny, high-speed aluminum oxide particles and air to whisk away decay. Air abrasion is quiet, quick, and gentle to tooth structure. Most patients don’t require anesthesia, and the procedure is great for kids.

Is it bad if my gums bleed after I brush my teeth?

Healthy gums do not bleed. If you see blood on the toothbrush or in the sink after you brush, you need to pay attention. Bleeding gums may be a sign of rough scrubbing instead of gentle brushing, using a hard-bristled toothbrush instead of a soft one, plaque and/or tartar buildup below the gum line, or gum sensitivity due to periodontal disease. If the problem persists despite correct brushing and flossing methods, or if it occurs every time you brush, please contact our office to set up a periodontal evaluation. Dr. Blanchard offers non-surgical treatments to eliminate gum disease and restore gums to good health.

Do I really have to floss every day? I mean, what's the big deal?

It's been said, "Only floss the teeth you want to keep." And that's no exaggeration! Daily flossing is critical for optimal oral health. It loosens food particles in tight spaces that your toothbrush can’t reach, gets rid of plaque buildup that brushing alone doesn’t remove, and exercises your gum tissues. Most importantly, flossing helps prevent gum disease, a serious condition that can reduce your lifespan. So, think of daily flossing as the finishing touch after brushing and insurance for your smile and your health.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I don't want to wear braces, what can you do to help?

Dr. Blanchard offers a number of ways to improve the look of front teeth without the use of unsightly braces. For slightly crooked or unevenly worn teeth, he may suggest a bit of dental bonding or the application of porcelain veneers to deliver a bright, uniform look. Some patients may benefit from all-porcelain crowns or inlays/onlays. In most situations, we can perform these enhancements in only two appointments! Call today to schedule a consultation. We'd be happy to talk with you further about the option that best suits your needs.
